Dabo Swinney jokes about playing different quarterback due to UNC's recent results

The North Carolina Tar Heels lost their last two games to Georgia Tech and North Carolina State, with backup quarterbacks running the opposing team’s offense. And that got members of the media wondering would Dabo Swinney try his hand at copying those teams’ success? According to the Clemson headman, ‘anything’s possible.’ During a recent Tiger’s press conference, Swinney joked about playing different quarterbacks to take North Carolina off balance and gave his honest assessment of the Tar Heels’ last two losses.

“Yeah, maybe. You never know. Anything’s possible,” said Swinney. “Georgia Tech, I think, played three quarterbacks in that game. I mean, they just kept rolling them. And they got down early, battled back, and just made a few plays.

“North Carolina just was a little off. They just missed a few plays that were there but just a little off in that game. And all of a sudden, guys get a little momentum, and they found the run game. They really leaned on the run game and took the air out of the ball, and shortened the game a little bit. Just a bunch of player-specific type plays that they had in, especially with quarterbacks in the game. But it was a crazy game, for sure.”

If Clemson wants to take anything from North Carolina’s last two losses, it’s limit their star quarterback Drake Maye. Both Georgia Tech and North Carolina State did an excellent job of keeping the Tar Heels receiving threats in front of them and minimizing passing windows. More times than not, both teams elected to drop more players into coverage and rush three or four players. If Clemson can do that, the Tigers we’ll have a good chance of coming out on top regardless of who’s playing quarterback for them.

Mack Brown explains how he relates to Dabo Swinney, Clemson being the ‘gold standard’

Ahead of his showdown with the Clemson Tigers in the ACC championship game, North Carolina head coach Mack Brown took time to address Clemson and their head coach Dabo Swinney. While some in the media and individuals outside of the program have been critical of the Tigers in the last two seasons, Brown has not. In fact, the Tar Heels headman understands the level of excellence Clemson has displayed over the years, recently calling them the ‘gold standard.

“Dabo’s done an unbelievable job. I can relate to the type of success he’s had because, at one time, we had that at Texas. And if you lose any games, it’s like it’s a disaster because their standard is so high,” said Brown. “One hundred sixty wins and 38 losses as the head coach at Clemson. Second winningest program since 2015 with 99 wins. He’s won two national championships. They’ve appeared in the College Football Playoff six times. They’ve won six straight ACC championships from 2015 to 2020. Seven seasons of at least 11 wins and a chance at an eighth this year. And four 14-win seasons.”
