Newly hired Colorado coach Deion Sanders met with Willie Taggart about joining his staff, according to a report from ESPN senior writer Pete Thamel. Taggart was most recently the head coach at Florida Atlantic before being fired last month at the end of his third season.

Taggart also brings experience coaching at a pair of Power 5 schools in Oregon (2017) and Florida State (2018-19). Before that, he was the head man at his alma mater of Western Kentucky as well as South Florida.

According to Thamel, Taggart has not accepted a job at Colorado yet. The coach also had a meeting with Michigan last week and is set to visit with the Baltimore Ravens later this week, so will have plenty of options to choose from.

Taggart has had mixed results as a head coach, amassing a mediocre 71-80 record across 13 seasons. His most successful year came in 2016 with South Florida, which he led to a 10-2 record.

Sanders is set to take over a Colorado program that finished 1-11 this season and has not produced more than five wins since 2016. In fact, the Buffaloes have finished with a winning record just four times over the past 20 years.

Sanders comes to Colorado from FCS school Jackson State, which he led to a 27-5 record over three seasons. That includes two conference championship seasons and appearances in the Celebration Bowl.

Sanders landed at Jackson State in 2020, with his previous coaching experience coming at the high school level. He quickly turned Jackson State into a juggernaut among HBCU schools, largely through his ability to recruit.

Now he will hope to do the same at Colorado. But in addition to hitting the recruiting trail for new players, Deion Sanders must also recruit new coaches to his staff and it appears Willie Taggart is one of his targets.
