Urban Meyer can’t imagine overhauling roster like Deion Sanders, Colorado

Deion Sanders and Colorado had major roster turnover before and after the team’s spring period. Former head coach Urban Meyer couldn’t imagine running a college football team quite like that.

Colorado AD Rick George defended his newly hired head coach. While Meyer supports Sanders as a friend and coach, the portal movement in Boulder is a sight to behold.

Meyer wondered how Sanders would balance the amount of players going in and out of the Colorado program.

“How do you function,” Meyer said on On3’s Urban’s Take with Tim May. “You know, I can’t even imagine the recruiting going on right now and talking to other players and other programs and trying to get them to come to you. Then I’m also trying to wrap my head around players being told just to leave. We’ve all been as a coach, you know, I wouldn’t be truthful to say there weren’t times I wanted to tell players to leave, but you just really can’t do that. You can make it hard on them and make them either improve or they leave.”

Meyer cited a recent example about the portal working out well for a team instantaneously.

“I saw Michigan State get lightning in the bottle,” Meyer said. “When they won 10 or 11 games, they had 27 or 30 new players. (For Colorado), you’re talking about the numbers, (they’re) astonishing. Since spring ball ended, and by the way a beautiful day in Boulder and I know it snowed and all that but I’m just talking about the crowd. The energy, that place deserves that. By the way, I was a Colorado State when Colorado won the national title. That’s a great place. I can’t believe they pulled it off.”

Meyer loves the way Sanders approached his job as a coach but is curious how this latest venture will work.

“But Deion is a friend of mine,” Meyer said. “I really appreciate him. I think he’s doing right by the player in a lot of ways, but also, you just wonder what happened to those guys that had a full scholarship to Colorado and you know, I wonder if the media will do story follow up. See what happened.

“All these players were already there and ultimately I guess you’re 1-11 and it’s been really bad football for a long time. Deion was hired to go in there and that’s what he’s paid to do and hired to do, go flip the switch and flip it around.”
