Fairfax (Va.) Paul VI Catholic four-star recruit Darren Harris has committed to Duke, his dream school.

Harris, a 6-foot-6 class of 2024 shooting guard, ultimately chose the Blue Devils over Maryland, Ohio State, and Miami.

The DMV native is the first player to commit to Duke in the 2024 class.

Harris ranks as the No. 48 overall prospect in the 2024 class, according to the On3 Consensus, the average ranking from all four major recruiting media companies. He also ranks as the No. 14 shooting guard in the class and the No. 1 prospect in the state of Virginia.

Harris on his commitment to Duke

“I chose Duke because I feel like that’s the best fit for me on the court and off the court,” Harris said to On3. “I’ve built a great relationship with coach (Jon) Scheyer and the entire staff. They’ve always been honest with me and I’ve always loved Duke as a program.”

What type of player is Duke getting in Darren Harris?

“Duke is getting a great player, who is a elite shooter, and very smart,” Harris said. “They’re getting someone who’s dedicated to getting better every day and knows how to win.”

Harris has a message for Duke fans.

“My message to Duke fans is I can’t wait to get there and continue the success the program has had.”

Duke, the dream school

It’s always a full circle moment when a player is able to attend their dream school, especially on scholarship. That’s the case for Darren Harris and Duke.

“Duke was actually my dream school,” Harris said in an interview with On3 earlier this year. “I watched them a lot growing up. I was a fan of everything they do basically. Coach K was obviously a legendary coach. He will be stepping down but I feel like coach Scheyer can really be trusted in that role as head coach. Growing up, Duke has always stood out to me. They’ve always had the best talent, the best recruits. Duke teaches you how to do all the little things, play smart, and how to carry yourself off the court with class.”

Scouting Summary

Darren Harris is an elite shooter; we’re talking in the conversation as the best shooter in high school basketball. At 6-5, he has great positional size. He is always square and always ready to let it fly, from 35 feet and in. Harris played up in age on the Nike EYBL 17u Circuit, where he started for the Peach Jam runner-up and averaged 1.8 made threes per game. His athleticism will be a question as he lacks top-end bounce or pop, but his IQ has him in the play. He has developed his handle, getting to the rim off sloppy closeouts in straight lines. The more he develops his handle, the more lethal he becomes. His dad is a high school coach. – On3’s Jamie Shaw, National Recruiting Analyst
