Jon Scheyer has big shoes to fill at Duke next season. As the man tasked with replacing Mike Krzyzewski as the Blue Devils basketball coach after 42 seasons, Scheyer faces all the pressure.

According to Scheyer, however, things are going pretty smoothly so far. With Duke wrapping up its summer session this week, the coach posted an update on Twitter to let fans know where things stand.

“It’s been a great summer,” Scheyer said. “Really enjoyed working with our team and we’re still excited to get our entire group back together. Jacob Grandison is still working his way back from injury. Tyrese Proctor, we need to get Tyrese here on campus. We’re gonna be off and running in the fall.

“Our guys have worked incredibly hard and made great strides in the weight room. We’ve gotten in better shape and we’ve gotten a feel for each other. There’s a lot of newness for us just getting to know one another in the best way possible. We’ve really taken great steps in doing that and made great strides on the court understanding the physicality and speed we have to play with. Can’t wait for this preseason and before we know it, games will be here. Proud of this group. It’s been a pleasure to work with them every day, but we also have a lot of work to do in the meantime.”

The Blue Devils are coming off of a Final Four appearance this past season, but return just one starter in guard Jeremy Roach. Thankfully, Krzyzewski left Duke in good hands by signing the No. 1 recruiting class in the country according to On3’s Team Rankings. The class features the No. 1 and No. 2 recruits in the country, respectively, in Dariq Whitehead and Dereck Lively. It also has the nation’s No. 5 overall player in Kyle Filipowski.

Aside from its recruiting class, Duke also added transfer players Ryan Young, Kale Catchings and Jacob Grandison. Not all of the new players have even arrived on campus yet, so Scheyer hasn’t yet gotten the opportunity to work with his full roster.

Although this will be Jon Scheyer’s first year as head coach, his history with Duke runs deep. After playing for Krzyzewski from 2006-10, Scheyer later joined his staff as an assistant in 2014. There he remained, soaking up the lessons from Coach K over the next eight years before getting his shot at the young age of 34.

As Scheyer gets ready to enter Year 1, he’ll aim to carry those lessons with him amidst all the new faces.
