Former Florida quarterback Emory Jones could be getting close to a transfer portal decision.

Jones is preparing to visit Arizona State this week, according to SunDevilSource’s Chris Karpman. He entered the portal last month after starting for the Gators last season under Dan Mullen.

Jones played four years at Florida and turned in the best season of his career in 2021. He completed 64.7% of his passes for 2,734 yards and 19 touchdowns in the air while also rushing for 759 yards and four touchdowns. He proved to be an effective dual-threat, and now he’ll take a look at joining Herm Edwards’ program after entering the portal.

Edwards is on the hunt for another quarterback after losing Jayden Daniels to the portal earlier this offseason. Daniels ended up at LSU, where he’ll compete with Myles Brennan for the starting job under new Tigers coach Brian Kelly.

Florida underwent a coaching change after the season, bringing in former Louisiana coach Billy Napier to replace Mullen, and Jones eventually decided a transfer would be the best move for him.

Arizona State has been in on Emory Jones from the beginning

Early in the transfer process, Arizona State was in on Jones. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported the Sun Devils expressed interest right away after coaches followed him on social media the same day he entered the portal.

“Multiple coaches from Arizona State followed Jones on social media in the wake of the news,” Thamel said. “Arizona State has one of the thinnest quarterback rooms among Power Five schools. Other schools that did the same were North Texas, Akron, Arkansas State and Rice.”

Ultimately, Jones is looking for a chance to compete. If he would have stuck at Florida, he would have been competing with Anthony Richardson, who showed great flashes at times last season. The Gators also added Ohio State transfer Jack Miller to the mix, and brought in Max Brown as part of their latest recruiting class.

When looking for a program to transfer into, Jones just wants to find somewhere that fits his style of play.

“He’s looking for an opportunity to compete and play at a high level and display his talents in an offense that suits his skill set,” Quincy Avery, who is the quarterback trainer for Jones, said, via Thamel.
