Florida social media team drags Brian Kelly over Tom Petty tradition
Florida pulled off an impressive win on Saturday, taking down LSU in the Swamp in a game in which it dominated the second half. And the Gators were all too keen to celebrate, giving Brian Kelly a taste of his own medicine after the game.
The Florida social media team crafted a video using some of Kelly’s own comments to his team about co-opting the Florida tradition of singing Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” after the third quarter.
“To me this is where you start thinking about ‘I’m going to remember that song because I’m going to sing that song in the fourth quarter,'” Brian Kelly said. “I’m going to remember that, because that’s my confidence level, because going into the fourth quarter we’re going to have this team. So I’m going to be thinking in terms of I want to know the words to that song.'”
Naturally, Florida led with the comments, then the Petty came blaring in. Check it out below.
The big win over Brian Kelly and the Tigers was at least in part attributable to the play of star freshman quarterback DJ Lagway. Lagway was on point throwing the ball down the field, even playing through a lingering hamstring injury.

He finished the game 13-of-26 passing for 226 yards and a touchdown.
Head coach Billy Napier went out of his way after the game to praise the young gunslinger.
“Let me tell you something. As a coach, it’s always been about purpose. The players are the purpose, right? For them to experience the gratification. Now, these guys have been an incredible example of the intangibles that we want our team to be about. The way they’ve stuck together. Obviously, a ton of adversity,” Napier explained.
“I think the guy wanted to play last week. We felt like we were doing what was right by him. He didn’t miss a rep all week. The training staff did a great job. You know, he was probably 85% tonight, but played from within the pocket.”
With the win over Brian Kelly, Florida made the possibility of becoming bowl eligible much more realistic. The team still needs one more win and has remaining games against Ole Miss and rival Florida State.
