Steve Spurrier reacts to Florida's loss to LSU: 'Not a good way to lose'

Steve Spurrier didn’t sugar coat it after Florida lost to LSU on Saturday. There was no way around it anyway — the Gators were downright awful as they fell 20-10.

Quarterback DJ Lagway threw five interceptions, yet Florida continued to call his name. Spurrier offered his thoughts on the performance in a recent episode of Another Dooley Noted Podcast, noting the lackluster offensive showing took away from how well the defense played.

“It was not a good way to lose,” he said bluntly. “Our defense played super. They gave up one touchdown and maybe a field goal, although I think it came after a turnover. We threw too many passes. Obviously, when you don’t hit ’em, you threw too much. We had our chances, but five interceptions, you gotta throw five touchdowns to throw five interceptions.

“…I’m sure coach (Billy) Napier’s looking at the stats and looking at this, that and the other and saying ‘We can’t throw the ball 45, 50 times. We need to run it half the time.’ I got a feeling we’ll make some changes in the game plan.”

Florida was down only 13-10 at halftime, a minor miracle that the game was still within reach after the way its offense had played. But despite holding LSU without an offensive touchdown in the second half, the Gators failed to score again on their way to the loss.

The loss is the second in a row for Florida, which fell 18-16 on a last-second field goal against USF the week prior. The Gators were No. 13 in the AP Poll prior to that contest but are now unranked after a 1-2 start.

That’s caused things to heat up significantly for coach Billy Napier, who is in his fourth year at the helm. Napier has a 20-21 overall record and his only winning record is an 8-5 effort from this past season.

It’s clear some things have to change in the game plan for Florida as Steve Spurrier mentioned. The Gators have a brutal stretch coming up with three straight games against opponents ranked inside the top 10.

Perhaps we will see the Gators lean a little bit more on the run for some of these upcoming contests after their anysmal performance through the air Saturday. Next up is an in-state game against No. 4 Miami at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium.
