Jameis Winston jokes that Florida State soccer is Seminoles' 'best football team' after national title win

Florida State football caught a stray from one of its own Monday evening. Following the soccer team’s 1-0 victory against Stanford to claim the national championship, former Seminoles quarterback Jameis Winston took to social media to congratulate them.

In the process, however, he made a joke at the expense of FSU football. Winston cracked that the soccer team was “consistently” the “best football team” that the university had to offer.

It’s hard to argue against Winston’s point given the recent success of the soccer team. Since 2014, the program has won five national championships and made eight trips to the College Cup. They also have made 26 consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament and won the ACC Tournament five years in a row.

Compare that to the Florida State football team, which hasn’t won a national championship since Jameis Winston led them to the BCS Championship in the 2013 season, and it’s understandable where the quarterback’s comments come from. Florida State football finished 5-7 this past season to miss out on a bowl game for the second straight year.

Despite the lackluser performance from the past two years, Florida State opted to bring coach Mike Norvell back for the 2026 season. He’ll certainly enter the year on the hot seat as fans and alumni such as Winston demand better results.

At least for now they can celebrate the success of Seminoles soccer. At least on that field, a dynasty looks like it is brewing in Tallahassee.

Florida State soccer takes down Stanford to claim fifth national championship

Things came down to the wire in Monday evening national championship game. The Seminoles needed a goal from Wrianna Hudson with just over three minutes remaining to break a scoreless tie and go up 1-0.

Along with Hudson’s heroics, Florida State also played exceptional defense and got a great performance in goal by freshman keeper Kate Ockene. She had nine saves on the night, including multiple ones at close range in the first half. This was on the heels of her save in the final seconds on Friday night to preserve the win over TCU.

“She’s a little animal,” Pensky said. “It’s big-time. She’s the MVP of this match, and that’s what great goalkeepers have to do.”

The national championship was the third in the past five seasons for Florida State and the second under coach Brian Pensky. They’ll have a lot to celebrate as they head home with yet another trophy.
