Colbie Young arrest: Kirby Smart announces indefinite suspension for Georgia WR
On Wednesday, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart announced wide receiver Colbie Young has been suspended indefinitely following his arrest. The two finally got to meet and have a conversation but Smart will have Young away from the program until the legal matter is finished.
“I got to speak to him this morning,” Smart said during the SEC Coaches Teleconference. “He’s been suspended indefinitely until this legal matter has resolved. We can’t really comment any further on the specifics of it but had a good meeting with him this morning.”
Young was arrested on Tuesday morning on two charges, both of which are misdemeanors — battery and then assault on an unborn child. He was arrested by the Athens Clarke County Police at 4:18 a.m. ET and did not get to speak to his head coach until Wednesday morning.
This is far from the first arrest Georgia has dealt with in recent times. Well over double-digit Bulldogs have been in legal trouble ever since the program won its first national championship back in 2021. It’s been a continual topic of conversation for Smart, even as his team wins.
Smart says Georgia will continue to speak to their players about the seriousness of these incidents, wanting to make good decisions off the football field.

“We’re committed to continue to educate our players and do the best job we can of making sure they understand the serious nature of these incidents,” Smart said. “It’s very unfortunate but we want to be responsible of decision-making, on and off the field, and this is obviously a really tough situation. But he is suspended indefinitely until the legal matter is resolved.”
Through five games, Young is Georgia’s fourth-leading receiver, having 11 receptions for 149 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Carson Beck is not afraid to spread the wealth but Young has been one of the top targets. Beck will now work without him for the indefinite future following the suspension.
After back-to-back games against Alabama and Auburn, Georgia’s next game will take place on Saturday against Mississippi State. The following week will be a trip to Austin for what could be another top-five matchup for the Bulldogs vs. Texas before enjoying a bye week.
Young will go through the legal process before potentially returning at some point.
