New Oregon head coach Dan Lanning has officially completed his tenure with the Georgia Bulldogs. Lanning’s tenure with Georgia ended in ceremonious fashion, as the Bulldogs defeated Alabama to win a national title on Monday.

With the season now in the books, Lanning has begun his full-time role as Oregon’s head football coach. While speaking with media on Thursday, Lanning recapped how Georgia head coach Kirby Smart told him goodbye, and went in depth on his appreciation for Smart’s role in developing him as a coach.

“I’d say my biggest ally with Coach Smart was more observation in the last month, in the last four years, in my time with him in Alabama,” Lanning said. “More than anything, rather than asking a question I just watched how he operated day in and day out. After the (National Championship) game was over, he sent me a text message. ‘Hey, love you Dan. Got to remove you from the staff thread. Appreciate you coach.’ But now we’re on the other end of things.”

Lanning’s appreciation for Smart is clear. He hopes to continue leading on Smart for guidance in the future, although that might have to go on pause for now. Lanning and Smart will quickly go head on, as Georgia and Oregon will face off in the first week of the 2022 season, setting up an intriguing matchup with a lot of storylines.

“I’ll be forever grateful for what Coach has done for me and my development as a coach. And I will certainly lean on him,” added Lanning. “I got to feeling between now and game one we probably won’t talk as much. We might after we complete that game. I know he will always be a resource there for me as I can be hopefully for him at some point if there’s ever some way I can help him.”

Like Lanning, other Georgia assistants could soon be leaving

Lanning’s loss will be a big one on Georgia’s staff. He was a big part of building one of the most dominant defenses in recent college football memory.

But Lanning might not be the only coach moving on after the season. According to FOX’s Bruce Feldman, multiple other key assistants could be leaving soon as well.

“A couple of potential staff moves to keep an eye on at Georgia: OC Todd Monken may return to the NFL and DBs coach Jahmile Addae also could be moving on, per sources,” said Feldman.
