Stetson Bennett is in his final season as the Georgia quarterback, with a long, strange and successful career already behind him and a chance to win a second national title right head of him. Either way, though, as of January 2023, Kirby Smart will officially be on the prowl for a new quarterback to take the reins from Bennett. Perhaps the top option is an organic one in current backup Carson Beck, who’s already shined so far this season when put in.

Given the dominative nature of most Georgia wins, the Dawgs have had several chances already to give their second-string QB a go. So Beck, through three games as the mop-up man late in these blowouts, is 15 for 19 for 178 yards and two touchdowns. Also, he completed exactly five passes in each of his three appearances so far. So he’s been effective.

Kirby Smart has been impressed as well. When asked about Beck’s performances in those three games thus far, the Georgia coach responded: “Yeah, Carson’s done a good job. He understands our offensive system. I think he’s playing with a lot of confidence. He’s, you know, in another year of being in the system.”

Another year of being in the system for Carson Beck, who was a four-star QB and a top-250 player in the 2020 recruiting class. In fact, Smart noted that Beck, when he first came in, even got reps in front of Bennett since the walk-on was mostly an unknown, unheralded transfer.

“And you remember, there’s a point in time where he probably had more reps than Stetson did, in terms of volume of work. Because he took a lot of reps as a two when Stetson took some as a three. So he’s got a lot of work.”

A lot to like in terms of experience and ability for Beck. Here were Smart’s final comments on the matter:

“He’s intelligent, he understands what the defense is doing, he understands his protections, he knows where to go with the ball, he’s accurate. So he’s done a nice job with the opportunity he’s got.”

Could be a lot more of that opportunity to come.
