There will not be a change at head coach for Georgia Tech football. Via Ken Sugiura of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Georgia Tech athletic director Todd Stansbury is retaining head coach Geoff Collins for next season.

“I have my man,” Stansbury said. “But now it’s time where, how do we get over the hump?”

Collins got his first head coaching job at Temple, where he spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons. There, he led the Owls to two seven-win seasons, two bowl games, and one bowl victory. Temple went 7-1 in the American and 8-4 overall in 2018.

After the 2018 season, Georgia Tech named Collins the 20th head coach in the program’s history. Collins was taking over a program that needed to be rebuilt. But after three consecutive three-win seasons, another change would have been possible. Georgia Tech went 3-9 in Collins’ first season in 2019 before going 3-7 last season. This season, Georgia Tech is 3-8 with a matchup against No. 1 Georgia looming in the final week of the regular season.

Stansbury: ‘We’re going to work together to get things fixed’

Despite just nine wins in three seasons, Georgia Tech has actually been in quite a few games this season. The Yellow Jackets have lost four games by one possession, including a 22-21 loss to Northern Illinois to begin the year and a 14-8 loss to Clemson in Week 3.

As Georgia Tech moves forward with Collins, Stansbury is going to ensure that he has the resources that he needs to succeed.

“Between the offense and defense and special teams, we’ve got to shrink that differential,” Stansbury said. “And if we can do that by 10 points, you’re looking at a totally different season. Where Coach is dialing in on what do, we need to do to close that differential, and it’s my job as the athletic director to give him and our players the resources they need to be successful to do that.

“I know he’s going to review kind of what it is that we need to do, where we are falling short, where there are holes in what we’re doing and we’re going to work together to get those things fixed.”
