Geoff Collins began his fourth season at the helm of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets when the 2022 season got underway, but he won’t be finishing that fourth year. Collins has now been let go, and Georgia Tech will be moving forward in another direction. Additionally, the report indicates that athletic director Todd Stansbury might be on the way out as well.

Since taking over in 2019, Collins has not been able to find success with the Yellow Jackets. He won three games in each of the 2019, 2020, and 2021 seasons, going 3-9 in 2019 and 2021 and 3-7 in 2020. Four games into this season, Georgia Tech was 1-3.

In Week 1, Georgia Tech was blown out against Clemson, falling 41-10. The Yellow Jackets responded with a 35-17 victory over Western Carolina in Week 2, but dropped Saturday’s game against Ole Miss in Week 3. All three of those games were at home.

Even though both of Georgia Tech’s losses this season were against top 20 teams, the fashion in which those losses came to be were likely the final straw in the tenure of Collins.

Collins ends his tenure at Georgia Tech with a record of 10-28 in four seasons. He posted a mere 7-19 record against ACC opponents.

Prior to coming to Georgia Tech, Collins spent two seasons as Temple‘s head coach. He led the Owls to two seven-win seasons and an 11-5 record in the American before departing for the Yellow Jackets.

Todd Stansbury had hoped Collins could turn things around at Georgia Tech

Last season, Georgia Tech lost four games by a single possession. So even though the Yellow Jackets went 3-9 in 2021, they were competitive in the majority of the games that they played. That has not been the case this season, and now athletic director Todd Stansbury is moving on from Collins.

In the offseason, Stansbury said that he “had his man” in Collins, reaffirming in his confidence looking ahead. Stansbury hoped that Collins could see improvement, but now the two sides will separate and move forward in a new direction.

“Between the offense and defense and special teams, we’ve got to shrink that differential,” Stansbury said when reaffirming his confidence in Collins after the 2021 season. “And if we can do that by 10 points, you’re looking at a totally different season. Where Coach is dialing in on what do, we need to do to close that differential, and it’s my job as the athletic director to give him and our players the resources they need to be successful to do that.

“I know he’s going to review kind of what it is that we need to do, where we are falling short, where there are holes in what we’re doing and we’re going to work together to get those things fixed.”
