Des Moines (Iowa) North three-star defensive lineman David Caulker flipped to Iowa State from Iowa on Thursday night. He was previously committed to the Hawkeyes since June 6.

Caulker is the No. 969 overall prospect and No. 107 defensive lineman in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 12 player in Iowa.

On3 rates Caulker higher than other recruiting services, according to the Industry Comparison. Even though he is not ranked in the 2023 On300, Caulker is the No. 56 defensive lineman and No. 7 player in Iowa.

“First off, I would like to thank Coach Ferentz, Coach Niemann, Coach Bell, Tyler Barnes and the rest of the Iowa Football Coaching staff,” Caulker wrote in a statement published to social media. “However, since being offered by Iowa State, something has always seemed to draw me back to the program, and it is something my heart and soul couldn’t ignore. With that being said, I will be decommitting from The University of Iowa, and I will be committing to Iowa State University.”

How Caulker’s decision impacts Iowa and Iowa State’s classes

Following Caulker’s commitment, the Cyclones’ 2023 recruiting class contains 19 pledges and is led by Ankeny (Iowa) four-star quarterback JJ Kohl, the No. 74 overall prospect in the On300. Iowa State’s group is currently No. 42 in the 2023 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings and No. 7 in the Big 12.

Meanwhile, the Hawkeyes’ 2023 class is No. 30 in the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings and No. 6 in the Big Ten. Iowa still has commitments from three defensive lineman, including Englewood (Colo.) Cherry Creek three-star Chase Brackney, Norwalk (Iowa) Norwalk Senior three-star Maddux Borcherding-Johnson and Norfolk (Neb.) Norfolk Catholic’s Kade Pieper.

Caulker has an On3 NIL Valuation of $5.8K. The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
