Douglasville (Ga.) South Paulding three-star quarterback Kasen Weisman received Power Five offers from California and Kansas. Numerous Group of Five programs including Colorado State, Navy and Western Michigan extended offers to the 6-foot-2, 170 pound signal caller as well.

Weisman wanted to go to a place where he could help shape the future of a program. That’s why he committed to the Jayhawks on Thursday.

“A lot of kids want to go in(to) the winning programs and just be a part of it,” Weisman told On3. “But the kids that we have committed in our class want to help change our program into something that it could be. We want to be the foundation of some thing that might happen four, three, two years down the road.

“But Kansas football will be back just a matter of time.”

Weisman, the only quarterback in Kansas’ 2023 recruiting class, is the No. 1,114 overall prospect and No. 60 quarterback in the 2023 On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 107 player in Georgia.

Weisman is the third-highest-ranked prospect in the Jayhawks’ class, which ranked No. 77 in the 2023 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings and No. 10 in the Big 12 earlier today. The only recruits rated ahead of him are Cypress (Texas) Cy Ranch three-star wide receiver Jarred Sample and Jackson (Mo.) three-star EDGE Tony Terry.

Weisman felt the right fit at Kansas

The Jayhawks have struggled on the field as of late. They have not had a winning season since 2008 and won just two games last year.

But Weisman believes in the culture that second-year head coach Lance Liepold is building. He also built a close connection with quarterbacks coach Jim Zebrowski.

“I picked Kansas because we have the same moral values and me and Coach Z are basically the same person, high-energy person and (he) loves to coach his players,” Weisman said.

Weisman believes that the Jayhawks’ offensive system fits his style of play well. He also has “clicked” with the coaching staff for a long time.

The three-star also liked the environment around Kansas. He called the Jayhawks’ Lawrence campus “beautiful.”

Now that his commitment is official, Weisman is looking forward to chasing a state championship in his senior year. Additionally, he’s confident in his decision to join Kansas and is excited to see what happens in the next three-to-four years.

“…I think it’s a good opportunity to go lay the foundation for Kansas football for years to come,” Weisman said.
