With Nebraska in the middle of a full-fledged coaching search, Kansas coach Lance Leipold spoke about rumors that his name has come up. Leipold shared that he was “flattered” by the idea that Nebraska or teams like Arizona State in the Pac-12 Conference would pursue him as their next head coach, but pointed out that he joined the Jayhawks program with the intent to build their program up.

Leipold took over as head coach of the Jayhawks in 2021, and led them to an opening-game win over South Dakota for the first win in over 22 months for the program. Highlighting his first year with Kansas, they managed to take down Texas on the road for just the second win in their Big 12 rivalry’s history. With such early success and a rapid turnaround of the Kansas program, Leipold’s name has come up among coaching rumors around the college football landscape.

“Just like anything, I think you have to stay in the moment,” said Leipold of possibly getting another job. “Be where your feet are at. My wife, Kelly, and I — we came to Lawrence, Kansas not to move. At this stage of our career, it’s flattering. Like you said it’s early in the season, but our focus is try to build the Kansas Jayhawks into a winner — and a consistent winner for the long haul.”

This season, Kansas won their first three games of the year for a hot 3-0 start. After defeating West Virginia earlier this year, Kansas won their first conference opening game since 2009, and defeated Houston last week for their best start since that season. On top of proving their turnaround with a winning record, Kansas received AP Poll ranking votes for the time since 2009 as well.
