Following his departure from the Nebraska program in November, former Cornhuskers offensive coordinator Matt Lubick is reportedly joining the Kansas Jayhawks staff as a senior analyst. ESPN’s Pete Thamel shared that the two parties are finalizing the deal on Thursday.

Nebraska head coach Scott Frost fired Lubick along with his offensive line coach Greg Austin, running backs coach Ryan Held and quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco. The Huskers were coming off of a four-game losing streak in which they’d lost three of the four by a touchdown. Despite the changes, Nebraska lost the final two games of the season, again by a score in each loss.

The Kansas Jayhawks only notched two wins in 2021, the first season under Lance Leipold. The Big 12’s hardest struggling team could use some more offensive juice. The Jayhawks had the 114th offense last season, averaging just 20.9 points per game.

Lubick, a 50-year-old native of Bozeman, Montana, led Nebraska’s offense to No. 22 in overall offense. However, when it came to punching the ball into the endzone, they were 71st in the nation.

The 2021 season was Lubick’s second with Frost at Nebraska. The two coached together at Oregon from 2013 to 2015. He took over as the Ducks’ offensive coordinator in 2016 when Frost left for UCF. Following his time in Eugene, he coached at Washington.

Lubick has now coached wide receivers for a total of 19 years. In 2012, he was named the nation’s top receivers coach and was a finalist for national assistant coach of the year at Duke. He has also coached at Arizona State, Colorado State, Ole Miss, Oregon State and San Jose State.

Matt Lubick is the son of longtime Colorado State head coach Sonny Lubick. In the six seasons prior to Nebraska, Lubick was a part of two conference championship teams, five teams that finished the year ranked in the top 20 and four 10-win teams.
