Lance Leipold has become one of the coaching stars of the college football season with an undefeated record at Kansas. After a 2-10 first season, Leipold has the Jayhawks off to their first 5-0 start since 2009. While plenty wish to think this is the start of great things to come in Lawrence, others realize this means he won’t be with the program much longer.

Paul Finebaum joined ESPN’s Matt Barrie to discuss Leipold’s start and his future job opportunities. He said he doesn’t expect him to be at Kansas long after this season, if at all past 2022.

“I know this will be his week with GameDay and all the circus acts that they bring into town. But, ultimately, he’s getting out. He’s not going to be there long and he shouldn’t be,” said Finebaum. “I don’t care what Kansas fans think about what I’m about to say. If you can get a couple of wins and cement some momentum there? Have your agent get you an offer worth about four or five times that value. Wisconsin would be a great landing spot. Anywhere would be a great landing spot for him.”

Leipold was already a candidate for jobs across the country following the Jayhawks start that has included a Top-15 offense in the nation. With Wisconsin’s surprise firing of Paul Chryst this weekend, his connections to the Badgers have only added more fuel to that fire. That’s not even to mention his connections to Nebraska as well.

This isn’t ideal news for Kansas after what has been an exciting start to their 2022 campaign. The fact that College GameDay selected their game against TCU instead of Alabama vs. Texas A&M or The Red River Showdown says everything you need to know about the hype Leipold has brought in. However, college football is a business and Leipold is up for promotion. With at least seven games left on their slate, it’ll be interesting to see how these rumors heat up the rest of the year.
