Kansas fans in attendance at a Texas home game were able to be heard on the television broadcast chanting “SEC!” at the Longhorns after a late interception. With a seven-point lead with just over a minute in the game remaining, Kansas intercepted a pass from Casey Thompson. As they took the field to try and end the game, Kansas fans made their presence felt as they mocked Texas for their upcoming move to the SEC.

Kansas taunts Texas with SEC chants

Kansas fans in attendance on Saturday at the Longhorns’ home field were able to get a huge jab in at their conference opponent as the game was nearly finished. Taunts directed at Texas and Oklahoma have been targeted at their upcoming move to the SEC that was announced at the beginning of the season.

Rival schools in the Big 12 Conference are taking their shots while they can, and Saturday’s stung particularly hard as Texas was in danger of losing to Kansas in regulation time. The 1-8 Jayhawks were leading 49-42 at the time of their fans beginning the chants, but Texas managed to score a last minute touchdown to force overtime.

Despite their premature chants, Kansas was able to pull of the shocking upset in overtime after Texas scored first and kicked a field goal to take the seven-point lead. Kansas scored a touchdown in response and went for the two-point conversion to end the game. They converted, securing their second win of the season and their first conference win.

Kansas ended Saturday with a 2-8 record as the Longhorns fell to 4-6 on the season.

Turnovers proved too much

The difference on the day could be boiled down to a simple statistic as Texas looks for answers following the loss. The Longhorns turned the ball over four times compared to zero by the Jayhawks. Two fumbles lost and two interceptions, including a pick-six thrown by Hudson Card to start the second half.

Casey Thompson threw an interception of his own that almost lost the game in regulation before delivering a touchdown as time expired to force overtime. Thompson’s day leapt off the stat sheet with six touchdowns and 358 yards passing, but the Texas defense couldn’t stop the Kansas ground game.

Kansas running back Devin Neal ended the day with 143 yards rushing and three touchdowns on the ground. He even added a fourth touchdown on the day with a receiving score of his own.

Texas outgained the Jayhawks 574 yards to 420, but the four turnovers erased most of the advantage they gained. The Longhorns will close their season travelling to play West Virginia next week, before playing Kansas State at home.
