LSU was hit with NCAA recruiting violations on Thursday, September 22nd. These violations are related to former assistant James Cregg, who got a three-year show-cause penalty while the school got one-year probation among other penalties. However, these sanctions from the NCAA don’t have anything to do with the continuing case involving the LSU men’s basketball team.

The investigation into former LSU basketball coach Will Wade is still ongoing. According to Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger, that investigation is going to last a few more months and is expected to continue into 2023. A hearing will likely be scheduled for early in the next calendar year.

Brody Miller of The Athletic added to this report, pointing out a key difference between the two cases at LSU.

In the James Cregg case, LSU was willing to add self-imposed penalties. In other words, the school admitted that wrongdoing had occurred and tried to show atonement for what had happened. That is not going to occur in the basketball investigation. Any penalties handed out to LSU are going to come from the NCAA. That includes any potential scholarship reductions or postseason bans.

Will Wade isn’t a stranger to controversies. In 2019, Wade was caught on an FBI wiretap making an ‘offer’ to a recruit. He was suspended indefinitely because of the FBI probe but was reinstated shortly thereafter, after reportedly restructuring his contract.

In August of 2020, it was reported that there were investigations into recruiting violations at LSU. Two different NCAA committees have sent the case to the IARP (Independent Accountability Resolution Process) for review. Later, in March of 2022, an official Notice of Allegations relating to these reports was handed down to LSU by the NCAA. Will Wade was fired for this.

It now sounds like there won’t be a resolution to this until 2023.
