Following the scary collision of LSU defensive back Sevyn Banks on Saturday versus Auburn, head coach Brian Kelly told reporters on Monday that the transfer bruised his spinal cord. The injury will put him on the sidelines for five to six weeks.

“The diagnosis is a spinal cord bruise, which puts him similar to Major Burns‘ situation, nothing else, no structural issues,” Kelly said. “It’s probably going to take him five to six weeks before we can get him back.

“Really fortunate and really appreciate all the help that we got from our medical team and certainly Auburn’s as well in what was a very scary situation” Kelly added.

Banks went in for a tackle on Saturday but collided head-first and wound up motionless on the field. He went to the East Alabama Medical Center to receive further medical attention.

Kelly compared the recovery process to the one safety Major Burns is currently going through. It will require several weeks of rehab off the field before he can slowly rejoin in non-contact play.

Banks is a transfer from Ohio State and is in his first season with LSU. He played the last four years in Columbus before entering the transfer portal during the offseason. During his time with the Buckeyes, he totaled 43 tackles and 3.0 tackles for loss before taking his talents to Baton Rouge for his redshirt senior season.

The super senior appeared in one game this season, totaling four tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss in LSU’s victory over New Mexico.

Kelly sends heartfelt message to Auburn medical team, hospital

Brian Kelly took a moment Sunday morning to thank the Auburn-area medical teams for their work with Banks following the injury.

“A special thanks to the Auburn medical team, staff at East Alabama Medical Center and Beau Lowery and our trainers and doctors for their work last night,” head coach Kelly tweeted.

LSU tweeted out a mid-game statement following the injury as well. “Sevyn Banks was taken to a local hospital following an injury on the first play of tonight’s game,” the tweet read. “After a series of tests, he was alert and mobile. He has been cleared to leave the hospital and will return to the stadium under the care of team doctors.”
