With its win against Alabama last week, LSU is slowly creeping closer toward the top four in the College Football Playoff rankings. The Tigers came in at No. 7 when the updated top 25 was released Tuesday, making them the highest ranked two-loss team.

Although no school with multiple losses has ever made the CFP, it’s clear the Tigers could have a very strong case to be the first. As ESPN’s Heather Dinich explained on the rankings reveal show, all they have to do is win out to secure their spot and create mayhem elsewhere.

“LSU at No. 7 is the key to chaos in the College Football Playoff,” Dinich said. “If they run the table and they win the SEC, I think the committee makes them the first two-loss team to make it into the College Football Playoff. If they were to beat Georgia and Alabama, I don’t think there’s any doubt.”

Dinich also raised the question about where Georgia and Tennessee would fit in should the Tigers win out as SEC champions. Assuming the Bulldogs and Volunteers finish the regular season undefeated and Georgia then loses to LSU in the conference title game, both they and the Tennessee would be left fighting it out to make it in as one-loss teams.

It would also leave room for only two other conference champions to make the field.

“But then, what do they do with Georgia?” Dinich asked. “What do they do with Tennessee? If there’s chaos in those other Power 5 conferences, that’s the only way that the committee is realistically looking at those three teams.”

If it does come to that, it would seem that the Georgia would have the upper hand on Tennessee thanks to its victory against the Vols last week. However, it’s also worth noting that Tennessee has a win against LSU from this year, which could also impact the committee’s view.

Ultimately, the only thing known for certain is that LSU controls its own destiny and has an opportunity to shake up the College Football Playoff in a major way if things play out in its favor.
