Following LSU’s 42-21 loss to Kentucky on Saturday, head coach Ed Orgeron’s job security has been heavily questioned. LSU has now dropped two games in a row and sits at 3-3 on the season. Orgeron spoke on Tuesday about his current status as LSU’s head coach.

“My job is to come here to LSU and coach the best I can. And that’s what I’m doing,” Orgeron said. “Nobody’s told me anything. As far as I know, I’m the head coach of the LSU Tigers. I’m coaching as hard as I can today and taking it one day at a time.”

Orgeron was hired to take the LSU head coaching job in 2016. In his first year, LSU went 8-4 and won the Citrus Bowl. The Tigers were then 9-4 and 10-3 over the next two seasons, winning the Fiesta Bowl in 2018. Then, in 2019, Orgeron and LSU took off with a perfect 15-0, national championship winning season.

The last two years have been less than impressive for Orgeron after LSU’s championship, prompting questions about his job. Last season, LSU was 5-5 and things have only gotten worse this season. The Tigers have losses to UCLA, Auburn, and Kentucky, and the season is only halfway over and LSU is only getting started in the gauntlet of an SEC schedule.

Orgeron understood the expectations when he took the LSU job

As questions about his future have taken over the past couple of days, Orgeron doesn’t focus on that. Right now, Orgeron is focused on coaching LSU while the job is still his, and he is not a stranger to the expectations on him.

“I could go in there and read everything you guys write,” he said. “I could think about it and then go in there and tell them about it. But I don’t listen to all that stuff. The best thing for me to do is to be very positive and understand the expectations of LSU. I will say this. No one has to tell me about the LSU expectations. I know ’em, I was born with ’em. I understand this is not LSU’s performance, I understand my job, I get it totally. I’m gonna work as hard as I am today and I promise you I will not blink for anyone.”

Orgeron said that he has a good relationship with LSU athletic director Scott Woodward. The two meet every week.

“He’s been great. [I meet with him] every Sunday,” Orgeron said of his relationship with Woodward. “He’s been very positive, he’s been very encouraging every time I’ve met with him.”

LSU faces Florida and Ole Miss over the next two weeks before its bye. Then, the Tigers must face Alabama, Arkansas, and Texas A&M in three of the final four weeks of the season.
