Ed Orgeron has seen some fantastic wide receivers come through his program since he became the head coach of the LSU Tigers, and Deion Smith could be next in line. After joining LSU as a high-touted recruit, Smith broke out in a big way yesterday against Central Michigan.

To illustrate, Smith caught five passes — accumulating 135 yards and two touchdowns in the process. However, it was the compliment that Orgeron paid him that may be the most impressive part of Smith’s night.

“He reminds me of Justin Jefferson in a lot of ways,” said Orgeron. “He has great body control, he can catch the ball, he has deceptive speed and he can get off the press. And he has great hands.”

Evidently, Orgeron believes the freshman wide receiver has ridiculous potential. By comparing him to one of the best receivers to ever wear purple and yellow, he’s setting the bar high for Smith.

While Smith is showing out as a freshman, Jefferson didn’t catch a pass until his sophomore year. That year, Jefferson started to put himself on the map — catching 54 passes for 875 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Of course, Jefferson’s junior season set the bar for Tigers receivers new and old. Jefferson put up legendary numbers — 111 receptions, 1540 yards and 18 touchdowns.

As you can see, Smith has a long way to go to be like Jefferson. Still, Orgeron sees the potential that the LSU freshman possesses.

“I have seen those guys make some tremendous plays.”

In addition to Smith, the LSU wide receiving corps features a bevy of exciting players. So far, Kayshon Boutte, Jaray Jenkins, Jack Bech and Malik Nabers have all made plays in addition to Smith.

With so much hype behind the position group, Orgeron stated that everyone will get their chance.

“It’s getting there. I have seen those guys make some tremendous plays,” said Orgeron. “We have to design plays to get them all the ball. Malik Nabers probably had the best camp of all of them, and he was hurt, so he only got a couple plays tonight. Chris Hilton is a 7-1 high jumper. Those guys can make plays. They are going to share the ball. We will get it around to them and play them all.”

While yesterday was Deion Smith’s night, it can be any one of the Tigers wide receivers who hurt you on any given night. One things for sure — LSU may give Ohio State a run for their money as ‘WRU’, if they haven’t already.
