Brian Kelly provides update on the status of Sevyn Banks

LSU Tigers head coach Brian Kelly just revealed some positive news about defensive back Sevyn Banks. Banks had to leave LSU’s 21-17 victory over Auburn after the opening kickoff. The Tigers defensive back had to be carted off the field on a stretcher after injuring his neck while attempting to make a tackle.

Following the game, Kelly revealed that LSU is “encouraged about Sevyn Banks and his health.” Kelly also said that Banks’ exams at the hospital came back clean, and he is clear to travel back with the team. Once they return to campus, the graduate transfer from Ohio State will undergo further tests and evaluations on his neck.

It was a scary scene for all in attendance and watching the game nationally as Banks lay on the ground motionlessly after attempting a tackle on the opening kickoff. Because of the manner in which Banks tried to make the tackle, he was also flagged for a targeting call on the play.

It is good news for the Tigers all around as Sevyn Banks it’s healthy enough to travel back with the team. And to make the ride home sweeter, LSU overcame a 17-point deficit on the road against Auburn to capture their fourth-straight win on the season.

On the opening kickoff of LSU vs. Auburn, Banks suffered an injury while trying to make a tackle. He collided with a Tigers player and had to be carted off the field as a result.

Banks went to make a tackle and his head collided with Auburn kick returner, leaving him motionless after the hit. The officials also threw a flag for targeting and confirmed the penalty after a review, resulting in a 15-yard penalty and boos from the fans in the stands. Banks was responsive after the play and is now being taken to a hospital the next town over from Auburn, according to ESPN announcer Joe Tessitore on the broadcast.

“He was responsive, he was speaking to the medical staff that was attending to him and that he is going to be brought to East Alabama Medical Center,” Tessitore said. “It’s in Opelika, Alabama. That is the next town over from where we are at Auburn at Jordan-Hare Stadium. He will be taken care of there.”

Later in the quarter, ESPN sideline reporter Katie George confirmed Banks headed to the hospital out of precaution.

“I just heard form LSU officials that Sevyn was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons, of course,” George said. “He was conscious … and he did have movement in his extremities. Great news for Sevyn Banks.”
