Brian Kelly has surprising reaction to LSU fans storming the field after Ole Miss win

No. 18 LSU secured a marquee win over the weekend, taking down previously unbeaten Ole Miss 45-20. The win was enough for fans to storm the field, to which coach Brian Kelly had a hilarious response on Tuesday during the team’s bye week.

The Tigers, of course, earned a $250,000 fine from the SEC for violating its policy on field access. The league dishes out a $50,000 fine for first-time offenders, a $100,000 fine for second-time offenders and a $250,000 fine for third-time offenders.

However, while LSU is no stranger to field-storming, Kelly was definitely taken aback.

“They were coming over the wall. I just was surprised,” Kelly said. “It didn’t appear to me that there was anything in my mind that this would be a game where we would storm the field. But, hey, let’s do more of it, I guess.”

Kelly paused for a moment, the faint wisp of a smile beginning to appear on his face as reporters also paused. Then the first-year coach proceeded.

“Hopefully I don’t get in trouble for that,” Kelly said, his voice lowering to a near-whisper. “That’s going viral.”

Then he clarified a touch more, so as not to incur any personal fines from the SEC.

“The commissioner’s going to get me. I don’t mean to do it, I mean let’s win more. I meant it in all seriousness that we want to win more. That’s all I meant. Thank you.”

LSU fans storming the field interrupted Brian Kelly’s postgame interview

Not for the first time this season, CBS’ post-game interview with the winning head coach was interrupted by fans storming the field.

The CBS broadcast crew even quipped that sideline reporter Jenny Dell needed to be safe exiting the mass of people that had gathered down on the grass in Tiger Stadium. Kelly, too, was encircled by the horde of fans.

“Yeah I was really surprised,” Kelly said. “I mean I didn’t expect it. I was doing an interview and the state police grabbed me and said, ‘We gotta go.’ I was like, ‘I didn’t think the interview was that bad.'”

Jokes aside, Kelly probably won’t sweat the quarter million the Tigers have to pony up for taking down the Rebels and watching fans celebrate. After all, wins in the SEC are hard to come by. Especially against top-10 opponents.

LSU will get a crack at another such opponent after this week’s bye.

No. 6 Alabama is headed to Baton Rouge on Nov. 5 for a night game in Death Valley in a game that will be carried nationally on ESPN.
