The LSU Tigers are gearing up for their matchup on Saturday with the Mississippi State Bulldogs and head coach Mike Leach’s famous “Air Raid” attack, piloted by signal-caller Will Rogers. On Wednesday, the Tigers revealed on Twitter that they have named four guest captains for the game: T-Bob Hebert, Will Blackwell, Brandon Taylor, and former LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson, the older brother of former LSU star Justin Jefferson.

All four players were members of the 2011 LSU football team that led the Tigers to one of the greatest seasons in college football history. Truth be told, the 2011 LSU defense had one of the best secondaries the sport has ever seen. Many people often forget just how good that team was, simply because they were blown out by Alabama 21-0 in the 2011 BCS National Championship Game. The Tigers’ secondary featured the likes of Morris Claiborne, Ron Brooks, Tyrann Mathieu, Tharold Simon, Brandon Taylor, Eric Reid, and Craig Loston.

Simply put, it will be hard for LSU or any other team in college football history to match just how incredible that 2011 Tiger secondary truly was. Opposing teams managed just seven touchdown passes that season, the second fewest in the nation behind Alabama. LSU only allowed 15 touchdowns in 14 games–the fewest in the Les Miles era in Baton Rouge.

Brandon Taylor was a three-year starter for the Tigers at strong safety and he wore No. 18. That number was usually given to a player who displayed selflessness and courage. The honor is voted on by the team and it’s the old number of quarterback Matt Mauck, who was the captain for LSU’s 2003 national title team.

T-Bob Hebert was a versatile offensive lineman for the Tigers who played in 42 games, starting 26 of those during his career. In the 2011 season when LSU made it all the way to the national championship game, he started at three different positions along the offensive line: left guard, center, and right guard. During his career, he racked up 198 knockdown blocks.

Will Blackwell was an elite offensive lineman for LSU at both the left guard and right guard positions. He earned first team All-American honors from several publications following the 2011 season. He helped to anchor an offensive line that ranked second in the SEC in rushing yards per game that year (202.6 yards per game). His senior season, Blackwell logged a team-high 112.5 knockdowns.

Kickoff for Saturday night’s game is set for 6:00 PM EST. The game will be in Baton Rouge, La.
