During LSU’s come-from-behind win over Auburn, one of the key plays came when Greg Brooks intercepted Robby Ashford with just over two minutes left in the game. Auburn was driving to try and take the lead and was already in field goal range when Brooks jumped a route and pulled the ball out of Koy Moore’s hands.

Being able to jump a route is one of the most important skills a defensive back has when trying to force an interception. To do so, you need to be able to read a quarterback’s eyes and know where he’s going with the football.

“I knew it was coming,” Greg Brooks said.

He knew what was coming because of an issue in Auburn’s play calling. He noticed that Auburn had run the same play six times. So, he knew what route every receiver would be running before the play happened.

While Greg Brooks deserves credit for being able to see this was happening, it’s also a massive issue for Auburn. Opponents know what Auburn is going to do before they do it. The offense’s playcalling is predictable and lacks any sort of creativity.

Greg Brooks was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2019. He originally went to Arkansas, before transferring to LSU.

Brian Kelly praised LSU

LSU head coach Brian Kelly praised the team for its effort in rallying and coming from behind to beat Auburn, after being down 17-0.

“Obviously we gave up big plays in the passing game. We expected this to be a game where we needed to stop the run and we gave up big plays in the pass game. Broke contain two or three times, we were out of coverage. Undisciplined. And offensively we’ve struggled, we hadn’t made any plays until the last drive,” Brian Kelly said.

“But give our guys credit, they battled. They weren’t playing great, they hung in there and we came up with the big play on defense and then a great drive at the end of the half. Showed some great resolve to get back into this, and we get the ball in the second half. New ball game.”
