The Maryland Terrapins are expected to hire Louisville’s Gunter Brewer as their next receivers coach, per On3’s Matt Zenitz. He is set to replace Zohn Burden, who joined the staff at Duke this offseason.

Brewer has spent the past three seasons in Louisville after a one-year stint with the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles. He has also coached for Oklahoma State, North Carolina, Ole Miss and Marshall in the college ranks.

Early in his career, Brewer got the opportunity to work with receivers who would go on to become stars. He coached Randy Moss while at Marshall and Dez Bryant with Oklahoma State. The coach was a part of the 1996 Marshall team that went undefeated and claimed a NCAA Division I-AA national championship.

Maryland already has a talented receiving corps for its new coach to work with. The Terps return Rakim Jarrett, who led the team with 829 yards receiving and five touchdowns this past season. They also get star receiver Dontay Demus back from a season-ending knee injury and added Florida transfer Jacob Copeland.

The Terrapins also bring back starting quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. He finished the year with 3,860 passing yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Maryland ended this past season with a 7-6 record. The Terrapins offense gave a taste of what could be to come next year in a 54-10 blowout victory against Virginia Tech in the Pinstripe Bowl. Taulia Tagovailoa threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns in that win.

The hiring of Brewer as the next receivers coach wasn’t the only news to come out of Maryland on Friday. The school is also reported to have brought in Kevin Steele to be the next defensive coordinator.

With the transfer additions and added assistants, Maryland coach Mike Locksley has a chance to field his best team since taking over 2019. He led the team to its first bowl victory since 2010 this past season, perhaps a sign of things to come.

The Terrapins are set to open the 2022 season on Sept. 3 against the Buffalo Bulls.
