Fairfax (Va.) Paul VI Catholic four-star DeShawn Harris-Smith has committed to Maryland, he told On3.

The 6-foot-5, 205-pound shooting guard chose the hometown Terrapins over Villanova, Indiana, Xavier, and Penn State. Smith joins four-star Jamie Kaiser (No. 63) and three-star Jahnathan Lamothe (No. 135).

What is Maryland getting in four-star Deshawn Harris-Smith

Smith is the No. 60 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, the average ranking from all four major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 11 shooting guard and the No. 1 player in the state of Virginia.

On3’s evaluators are higher than the industry on Smith, ranking him 45th nationally in the class.

This summer, the DMV native averaged 12.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game for Team Takeover (DC) on the EYBL Circuit. He also shot nearly 60 percent from the field and 41 percent from three.

Smith on his commitment to Maryland

“I chose Maryland because of two main things; the opportunity to play right away and it being close to home,” Smith said to On3.

“Both their guards are leaving after this year so it leaves a lot of minutes that need to be filled,” Smith continued. “Staying home is something only one school can offer and that is Maryland.”

What type of player is Maryland getting in DeShawn Harris-Smith?

“Maryland is getting a winner and a guard that’s willing to do whatever it takes to win,” Smith said. “I’m going to try to be a great leader when I get there because I know coach (Kevin) Willard is looking for me to play mostly point guard so I have to be able to take control of the team.”

Smith has a message for the Maryland fanbase.

“Get ready to see me Jahn and Jamie put Maryland back on the map.”

Scouting Summary

DeShawn Harris-Smith is a productive player who gets things done across the board. Offensively, he is an excellent passer and a confident secondary ball handler. While his jumper is more of a set shot, he made over 40% on the EYBL this summer. DHS is a noted winner, something that seems to follow him around. He uses his length and toughness to be a multi positional defender. He is a tough rebounder at 6-foot-5 and a strong finisher going left. While he may not standout in any one category he has no real holes in his game. Versatility and competitiveness describe his game well.
