Miami suffered a second loss on Saturday, this time falling on the road to SMU to see its playoff hopes put on life support. For quarterback Carson Beck, it was a nightmare relived.

Beck, once considered a potential Heisman Trophy candidate, has now thrown six interceptions in the team’s two losses this season. It was an interception in overtime against the Mustangs that proved the death knell for the Hurricanes on Saturday.

A dejected Carson Beck broke down what he saw from the coverage on that play in the low red zone. It wasn’t anything new.

“No, I mean they ran the same thing the whole time,” Beck explained. “I just executed the play that’s called and if I’m given the opportunity to, if I see something, change something, then I will. But again, I just execute the play that’s called. We weren’t able to execute at a high level at the end to close it out.”

Carson Beck seemed to miss the defender trailing his receiver underneath. He double-clutched before the throw, perhaps giving another split second for the defender to recover.

He fired and it was picked off. SMU would end the game a few plays later, running into the end zone untouched to clinch the 26-20 win.

But Carson Beck was focused on the mishap after the game. He knew how devastating it was for his team.

“I mean he made a good play,” Beck said. “They had a good coverage on for our play. Everyone’s inside leverage man, corners are outside trying to press everything out. We have all in-breaking routes, which, again they got us. He made a great play on the ball, so props to him.”

With the loss, Carson Beck and Miami have seen their playoff hopes wane dramatically. ESPN’s playoff predictor gave the Hurricanes about a 9% chance to make the playoffs as of the evening window of games on Saturday.

Beck has had a rough go of things after a strong start to the season. He’s now thrown for 1,947 yards and 14 touchdowns, but he has also thrown nine interceptions.
