Of all of the stories to break during the crazy coaching carousel, the situation with the Miami Hurricanes may be the wildest. According to reports, they have given Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal until midday Monday to make a decision.

Miami has continued to pursue Cristobal, despite not firing current head coach Manny Diaz. ESPN’s Greg McElroy sounded off on the Hurricanes and their handling of the situation on Sunday, saying Diaz deserves better.

“Let’s start by calling the situation regarding Manny Diaz reprehensible,” McElroy said. “The fact that this guy out right now on the recruiting trail, trying to pitch Miami as a destination to recruits and yet he’s twisting in the wind waiting word on what the future may be. Let’s put that aside. It’s remarkably unprofessional, they should be ashamed.”

McElroy talks Miami as a job

After looking past the treatment of Diaz, McElroy went on to talk about the appeal of Miami as a program. He started by talking about Clemson athletic director Dan Radakovich, who is reportedly the favorite to take the same role with the Hurricanes.

“Let’s however, look at Miami,” McElroy said. “For a long time this was a program, or at least in the last 20 years, where they have operated a little like a small market program. It doesn’t appear as if that’s the case anymore. They are now committing to football in a way, if this hire does come down, that second to no one. Dan Radakovich, an athletic director, allegedly going to become the next AD. He’s remarkable. He was great at Clemson — has great familiarity with what it’s like to be a part and serve on the College Football Playoff committee.”

Potentially adding in a head coach such as Cristobal would just be a bonus. He’s been an elite recruiter with Oregon and if the move does go through, Miami would have a “grand slam” hire on the sidelines.

“And then you go and get a tenacious recruiter that knows the landscape in Mario Cristobal,” said McElroy. “I don’t like speculating on moves that haven’t happened just yet but if in fact, this move does happen, in the middle of Monday like they say it might, this is an absolute grand slam for Miami when it comes to being a power player again in the college football landscape.”
