Rick Stockstill trolls Miami: 'They gave us $1.5 million but they got 1.6 yards per carry'

Not only did Middle Tennessee State go down to Miami and beat the Hurricanes, they thoroughly beat them. It wasn’t some skin-of-the-teeth upset, with MTSU passing for 408 yards and stymying the Miami offense for much of the game.

No, Miami got embarrassed. And now Blue Raiders head coach Rick Stockstill is pouring salt in the wound.

“Two goal line stands we stop them down there. They ran for 194 yard against Texas A&M, the number whatever team in the country, whatever they are. They ran for 68 against us. They averaged 1.6 yards per carry. They gave us 1.5 million, but they got 1.6 yards per carry,” Stockstill said on 104.5 The Zone out of Nashville.

“But you know, just — I don’t know where that came from,” Stockstill said about his diss.

It engendered a passionate response from Ron Slay, one of the show’s hosts — and a former Tennessee basketball player.

“I’LL TELL YOU WHERE IT CAME FROM COACH! IT CAME FROM YOUR SOUL!” Slay hollered.

And while Miami fans will be seething over it still, Stockstill is right. Not only did MTSU come in and burn down the Hurricanes offense and defense, they got paid — handsomely — to do so.

Not a bad days work for Middle Tennessee State.

Miami head coach Mario Cristobal has laid out what his team needs to do to rebound

When Mario Cristobal took over at Miami, the expectations were incredibly high. With a talented quarterback already in place, Miami seemed ready to plug and play in many aspects. After a couple of early wins over admittedly lower-level programs, the hype machine was unreal.

Then, with a trip to truly announce themselves, Mario Cristobal and Miami fell flat at Texas A&M. They followed this by getting beaten, badly, by Middle Tennessee State. Now, Miami needs to find a way to bounce back.

“If there isn’t, you shouldn’t play this sport, not here at the University of Miami,” Mario Cristobal said.

“You really got to be a man about this stuff. You know, you’ve got to be an adult about this stuff. All of us. Every player, every coach, every person in the organization, it’s as hard to take–and when I say that, give credit to every opponent that we play,” Mario Cristobal continued.

Mario Cristobal worked to not criticize or downplay Middle Tennessee State as an opponent. However, the expectation is that Miami beats them. So, the Hurricanes need to improve to the point where they don’t lose those games.

“Not downgrading the opponent, I’m not. But, we should’ve played a lot better than what we did. And, in terms of leadership, you know the expectation is for everyone to show up and we’re going to get better and work harder. Because, obviously, what we have done is not good enough and it isn’t enough.”

Miami will get that chance to bounce back against North Carolina on October 8th, after a bye week.
