Coming into the season, expectations around Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke were incredibly high. Many people even expected him to be the best quarterback in the ACC. However, in consecutive games against Texas A&M and Middle Tennessee, he and the offense struggled to be effective. This, inevitably, led to being booed by Miami’s home fans.

While speaking to the media, Tyler Van Dyke responded to fans booing him because of his poor offensive performance.

“Obviously, it was a rough day for me and the offense,” Tyler Van Dyke said. “You know, you just got to move on from it, honestly.”

“So, you’ve got to learn from the experience and just come back here and work even harder and get better from it. And that’s what we did last week. We had a really good week last week as an offense and we’re just trying to build on that and stack these days and do it every single day and that includes Saturdays, and that’s where it matters the most.”

It seems like Tyler Van Dyke expects the Miami offense to play better than they have been going forward. He also thinks the Hurricanes used their bye week to get right on offense. At the same time, he doesn’t blame fans for being upset because it shows their passion.

“But, yeah, obviously it’s a part of the game. You know, all that stuff. I mean, the fans are very passionate about Miami Hurricane’s football. I mean, you got to get the job done here. You know they’re very passionate. So, you know, it was rough, but that’s just how it goes and that’s what I signed up for,” Tyler Van Dyke concluded.

On the season, Tyler Van Dyke is completing 59.3% of his passes, has 809 yards passing, four touchdowns, and three interceptions. He was benched for backup quarterback Jack Garcia against Middle Tennessee. Now, while head coach Mario Cristobal has a world of confidence in Garcia, is going to continue to start Van Dyke.

Miami’s biggest issue against Middle Tennessee

Mario Cristobal knows that Miami needs to play better than they did against Middle Tennessee. The expectations are just higher than losing to a C-USA program. But, Cristobal thinks he knows where things went wrong.

“Well, there were four plays that result in about 315+ yards. Explosive plays hurt us. Now, offensively, we put our defense in situations that weren’t great and we did do a pretty good job, but explosive plays are typically the result of an offense making a big play or a bust on defense. Right, so you saw, you know, things I don’t know if things have to be rehashed in terms of alright, whether a guy got beat, whether we didn’t communicate well enough. I mean, same stuff. It hasn’t changed in two weeks in terms of what actually happened,” Mario Cristobal said.

“More importantly is what have we done going forward to address that and again assessing it and attacking it with practice, with a plan, a form of communication, technique work, scheme work, ways to help our guys be in situations where they can be successful has been the answer in the approach for us.”
