Nick Saban got his first big Power Five coaching job with the Michigan State Spartans, staying in East Lancing for five seasons. Along with his wife Miss Terry, Saban was able to start his family while coaching the program and took some time to reflect on that recently.

When speaking with Inside the Locker Room, Saban talked about how due to their upbringing, his kids are still pretty big Michigan State fans. More specifically, fans of head coach Tom Izzo and Saban claim they still take time to watch every single day. He even went as far as to call them”lifelong” Spartan fans.

“Everybody’s great, Miss Terry is great,” Saban said. “We have two grandchildren now and they’re doing great. Our kids are doing fine and we’re excited about having a great family. It’s been good for us and they’re all still Michigan State fans. They watch every Michigan State game, every Michigan State basketball game. They love Coach Izzo. That was kind of the heart and soul when they were growing up. That was the right age when we were there — really become lifelong fans.”

Saban and Izzo arrive at Michigan State in 1995 and worked toward bringing their respective programs to the top. The latter has appeared in eight Final Fours and won the national championship in 2000 and is still the head coach today. Saban did not replicate the success while with the Spartans, with the peak being a nine-win season in 1999. He left for LSU the following season.

Supporting their Dad and Alabama football will most likely always be the top priority for the Saban family. However, once the college football season comes to a close and it’s time to focus on college basketball, the crimson-colored apparel comes off and transitions to green and white.
