The Michigan State Spartans landed a veteran linebacker from the transfer portal on Wednesday. UNLV veteran Jacoby Windmon announced his commitment via Twitter.

The 6-foot-2, 230-pound productive and versatile linebacker/EDGE posted 118 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks as a junior. Upon entering the portal, he immediately caught the attention of Power 5 programs.

One of those was Michigan State, where the New Orleans native made an official visit last weekend.

“Michigan State, they have a pretty good program up there right now,” Windmon told On3’s Gerry Hamilton. “They have good guys on the staff and on the team. It was a pretty good visit.”

The message from Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker was to the point.

“You are one hell of a player,” Windmon recounted. “You fit in well in our defensive scheme. We want you to come be a playmaker for us.”

The talented EDGE defender was going to visit the Texas Longhorns this weekend, but changed his mind. Over the past 10 days, he earned 19 verbal scholarship offers. Kansas State offered within a matter of hours, while schools like Houston, Indiana, Iowa State, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, TCU and Penn State also made a move.

Jacoby Windmon started 18 games over last two seasons for the Running Rebels. He broke out in his sophomore season after posting 39 tackles and five sacks. He amassed 169 tackles and 12 sacks in three seasons in Las Vegas.

Coming out of high school, Windmon was a member of the Class of 2019. He was a three-star prospect according to 247Sports and a two-star prospect on Rivals. He chose UNLV over South Alabama after taking official visits to both schools.

Mel Tucker and the Spartans have had five Michigan State players enter the NCAA transfer portal since the end of the regular season.
