Michigan State wide receiver Nick Marsh plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. Marsh recorded a team-high 662 receiving yards and six touchdowns this season on 59 catches.

He’s spent two seasons at Michigan State. In his debut campaign, Marsh tallied 41 catches for 649 yards and three touchdowns. His receiving yards and receptions stand as the most by a true freshman in school history.

Nick Marsh played high school football at River Rouge (MI), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 174 overall player and No. 29 wide receiver in the 2024 recruiting cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings, a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all three primary recruiting media services.

Marsh is the second Michigan State player who plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. On Sunday, On3’s Hayes Fawcett reported that Michigan State running back Makhi Frazier plans to enter the portal.

Both players’ decisions were likely connected to Michigan State’s decision to fire head coach Jonathan Smith. MSU announced it was firing Smith on Sunday after the Spartans finished the regular season with a 4-8 record, eliminating them from bowl eligibility.

In his two years at MSU, Smith logged 4-15 overall record. Worse, the Spartans went 1-14 in conference play during Smith’s tenure.

On Sunday, Detroit Free Press reported that Michigan State is hiring former Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald to replace Jonathan Smith. Fitzgerald coached Northwestern from 2006-23.

In his 17 seasons at the helm of the program, he led the Wildcats to a 110-101 mark and a 65-76 record in conference play. With the help of Michigan State’s athletic administration, Pat Fitzgerald will look to lead the Spartans to new heights.

“Michigan State football has a proud history, a history that includes National Championships, Rose Bowl victories, Big Ten Championships, and a College Football Playoff appearance,” MSU athletic director J Batt said. “The standards for our program have not changed. It is our expectation that we compete for championships.

“While we will have a new coach next season, we must also do more as a department to support the program. President Guskiewicz and I are fully aligned to take the necessary steps to position our program to compete at the highest level. We are committed to providing an increased level of donor investment, department resources and enhanced infrastructure to effectively and efficiently deploy those resources.”
