It came down to California, Michigan, and Utah for Zack Marshall. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound athlete out of Carlsbad (Calif.) was only offered by the Wolverines a couple of weeks ago, but that is all it took.

After working out in Ann Arbor late in July, Jim Harbaugh extended an offer to the three-star and Marshall has committed to Michigan.

“Outside of my faith, it came down to three things that put Michigan on top,” Marshall told On3. “I can really see myself doing well in the Michigan offense. I really like how I fit with the players and the coaches too. Then the culture at Michigan fit me. It was all just a great fit for me at Michigan.”

Michigan had shown interest in Marshall earlier this year. He was on their radar and the interest was mutual. After spending time on campus and leaving with an offer, it didn’t take long for Marshall to make his decision.

“I came home feeling good about Michigan. I talked it over with family for a couple of days. We looked at culture, academics, and football and Michigan was a perfect fit in all three of those categories.

“Education is huge for me. I am going to study law and Michigan ranks in the top 10 in law. We loved the culture there. From the coaches to the fans to the people – all were kind and welcoming at Michigan. With football, Michigan has a lot of history and it a national top 10 program year after year.

“Michigan is strong is the three biggest things I am looking at. Michigan is the perfect fit for me.”

Marshall likes his potential role in the Michigan offense

Marshall is listed as an athlete because of his size and versatility. Michigan likes him as a tight end in their system. He and tight ends coach Grant Newsome have established a strong connection and Marshall likes the fit in Michigan’s offense.

“Michigan uses the tight end position in their offense, so I like that. They run a lot of 12 personel and I am one that could move around and be used in different ways. I will be blocking some, but I specialize in vertical routes and that is how they want to use me. My hands are a strength and they like that, my size, and my ability to run.

“I am willing to block at tight end, be a lead fullback if they ask me to, or catch passes. I am excited about the opportunity at Michigan.”

Marshall plans to visit Ann Arbor early in the season for a game. That may be the weekend he takes his official visit as well. Those plans are still being finalized. He knows he has found his future home.

“I am going from the beach culture in San Diego to the midwestern culture in Ann Arbor and I love it,” Marshall said. “The kindness around Michigan really stood out to me and my family. It is a great fit for me and I know I found the best school for me.”
