Michigan expected Jim Harbaugh to consistently recruit top-10 and top-five recruiting classes. That hasn’t been the case the last few years.

His 2022 recruiting class is solid and full of potential starters but only features five prospects ranked in the latest 2022 On300 rankings, which were released today. Bitter rivals Ohio State have 12 commits and Penn State, which has the No. 1 class in the country, have 11.

The top recruit in the 2022 cycle for the Wolverines so far is Grosse Point (Mich.) South four-star cornerback Will Johnson. Johnson made the slight jump from No. 49 to No. 48 in the newest rankings. His size and athleticism that makes him a premium prospect.

Lawndale (Calif.) Leuzinger EDGE Kevonte Henry was the biggest riser of Michigan’s recruits, jumping 37 spots from No. 119 to No. 82. Henry has had a great season for Lawndale (Calif.) Leuzinger, where he is playing on both sides of the ball and making an impact in all three phases of the game.

Bolingbrook (Ill.) Nazareth Academy wide receiver Tyler Morris and Tampa (Fla.) Gaither EDGE Mario Eugenio slotted in right near each other at No. 260 and No. 265 respectively.

Michigan did have one player move into the top 300 after being unranked in August. That was Belleville (Mich.) High linebacker Aaron Alexander, who is now the No. 282 prospect in the class.

Michigan is still in the mix for top uncommitted prospects

While Michigan’s class does not have the same number of On300 recruits as Ohio State or Penn State, the Wolverines are in the mix for some of the remaining top uncommitted recruits.

This includes Powell (Tenn.) High defensive lineman and No. 6 overall recruit Walter Nolen, Kennesaw (Ga.), Seattle Rainier Beach offensive tackle Josh Conerly and Kennesaw (Ga.) North Cobb EDGE Joshua Josephs.

As of right now, Michigan has a top-15 class, which is what it has had the past two cycles. That is good but it is a far cry from a few years ago when they were consistently ranking in the top five and grabbing elite recruits like unanimous 2016 No. 1 prospect Rashan Gary.

But the tides seem to be changing in Ann Arbor. Despite struggling against Rutgers in the second half Saturday, the Wolverines are 4-0 on the football field and moving up every week in the polls.

Grabbing a couple of these On300 recruits could do the same for them in the recruiting rankings.
