Mississippi State is targeting Mike Bobo as their new offensive coordinator, John Brice of FootballScoop.com reported on Friday afternoon. Bobo is a veteran play-caller with an extensive amount of experience at the collegiate level as an offensive coordinator. He rose to national prominence with the Georgia Bulldogs, a place where he also played quarterback during his college days.

Bruce Feldman of The Athletic later refuted this report, saying, “that’s not happening, and never was,” in a Twitter post on Friday night.

Bobo has also spent time as the head coach for the Colorado State Rams. In the past, he’s served in an offensive coordinator role for the Georgia Bulldogs, Auburn Tigers, and South Carolina Gamecocks, among other places. Bobo is widely known for grooming successful quarterbacks during his time with the Georgia Bulldogs, including Matthew Stafford, Aaron Murray, and David Greene. In 2012, Bobo was a Broyles Award finalist–the award given to the nation’s top assistant.

Mike Bobo coached some incredible players at Georgia

Some of the other prized pupils that Bobo coached while he was the offensive coordinator for Georgia were former stars A.J. Green, Todd Gurley, and Knowshon Moreno. All three players were some of the very best in Georgia football history during their time there. Green was a top five overall selection in the 2011 NFL Draft, while going on to become one of the best receivers in NFL history with the Cincinnati Bengals. Todd Gurley established himself as one of the greatest running backs in Georgia football history and he also went on to become a superstar in the National Football League, before knee injuries dramatically affected his playing performance.

Mississippi State has been making a variety of moves this with their coaching staff this offseason. In addition to bringing in Bobo as their new offensive coordinator, they are also hiring Will Friend as their offensive line coach.

During his playing career with Georgia, Bobo threw for 6,334 passing yards, which currently ranks as the eighth-most in Bulldog football history.
