Elkhorn (Neb.) Elkhorn South three-star defensive lineman Ashton Murphy has announced his commitment to Nebraska. He chose the Cornhuskers over Colorado and Iowa State among others.

Murphy is the No. 895 overall prospect and No. 90 defensive lineman in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 8 player in Nebraska.

On3 rates Murphy higher than other recruiting services, according to the Industry Comparison. Even though he is not ranked in the 2024 On300, Murphy is the No. 7 player in Nebraska.

The 6-foot-5, 242-pound recruit has visited Lincoln multiple times. He was most recently at Nebraska today, and was also on campus March 8.

“I met with coach (Terrance) Knighton and we discussed a little bit about the overall program and where he sees me on the defensive line,” Murphy told Bryan Munson of Husker Online. “He said he saw me as an edge player but there is still some possibility of shifts.”

The Cornhuskers did not offer Murphy until Jan. 31. The three-star received it from head coach Matt Rhule.

“He said they watched my film as an entire staff,” Murphy told Sean Callahan of HuskerOnline. “All 14 coaches liked what they saw.”

“I have always liked Nebraska,” he added. “It meant a lot to me to get the offer.”

Murphy is another foundational member of Nebraska’s 2024 class

Murphy is now the third member of Nebraska’s 2024 recruiting class. He joins Altair (Texas) Rice Consolidated four-star safety Roger Gradney and Houston (Texas) Klein Cain three-star interior offensive lineman Gibson Pyle.

Following Murphy’s commitment, the Cornhuskers are currently leading for five of the top players in Nebraska, according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine. They include Ainsworth (Neb.) four-star tight end Carter Nelson, Bellevue (Neb.) Bellevue West four-star wide receiver Dae’vonn Hall, Omaha (Neb.) Bellevue West three-star wide receiver Isaiah McMorris, Omaha (Neb.) Central three-star offensive tackle Caleb Pyfrom and Omaha (Neb.) Westside three-star safety Caleb Benning.

Nebraska is also pursuing some of the best players across the country. Phoenix (Ariz.) Pinnacle Five-Star Plus+ quarterback Dylan Raiola, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei four-star offensive tackle Brandon Baker and Santa Ana (Calif.) four-star running back Nathaniel Frazier are just a few of them.

“There are multiple things I like about Nebraska,” Frazier told On3’s Chad Simmons on April 4. “One is the 395 Academic All-Americans they have had there. Another is the coaching staff. I think Matt Rhule can change the program. I love how he and the staff coach the players. Then in Nebraska, it is all about Nebraska football. It has great fans and if you play football there, they tell me it is like being a celebrity.”
