Wide receivers coach Mickey Joseph isn’t the only pickup Nebraska appears to be getting from the LSU program for 2022.

According to On3’s Matt Zenitz, former LSU wide receiver Trey Palmer will likely transfer to Nebraska to reunite with his former position group coach. Palmer had 30 catches for 344 yards and three touchdowns this season. He started four games for the Tigers in 2021 and entered the transfer portal on Dec. 16.

Palmer entered this season with limited game experience from his first two years in Baton Rouge. He had a reception for six yards as a freshman and 10 catches for 108 yards last year in 2020.

The junior and Louisiana native was a four-star recruit according to On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. Palmer was the No. 5 player from Louisiana, No. 19 wide receiver and No. 96 player in the nation in the 2019 class.

Nebraska offense needs a revamp

Nebraska finished 2021 3-9, but they did not lose a game by double digits. Eight of the nine losses were one possession games, the most ever in college football. Nebraska could move the ball on offense, finishing second in the Big Ten with 447.6 yards per game, but they couldn’t score. That yardage per game figure had them behind Ohio State and ahead of Michigan. Ohio State scored 45.7 points per game, while Michigan posted 35.8. Nebraska? Just 27.9 points every Saturday.

Montana transfer Samori Toure was their leading receiver with 46 catches, but he had just five touchdowns all season. The big-play receiver averaged 19.5 yards per catch, which ranked in the top 15 in the country. He is now headed to the NFL after being named all-Big Ten honorable mention by the media this season. No other Cornhuskers receiver caught more than two touchdown passes in 12 games.

Additionally, Nebraska and Joseph were already able to flip 2022 wide receiver De’Coldest Crawford. He was previously committed to LSU, but the four-star ultimately signed with the Cornhuskers on Dec. 17.

Palmer could add elite talent and spark to an offense seeking an identity under head coach Scott Frost. They are still looking for a quarterback after the departure of former signal caller Adrian Martinez, but landing a former SEC wideout would be a good start to 2022.
