Nebraska quarterback Jeff Sims has been with the Cornhuskers for just a few months but he likes what he has seen from his new team. But, with that being said, he knows there is still plenty of work to be done.

Sims said the team needs to keep improving over the summer and can’t hang their hats on the work they did this spring. They need to keep improving.

“We take it up a notch,” Sims said after the Nebraska spring game last month. “We worked hard this spring and I just feel like now we’ve set the tone for what this team can be. We just got to you got to keep going because I feel like this team can be very special this season — like right now. We just got to take it up a notch in the summer and we got to go hard.”

Head coach Matt Rhule took over a struggling Nebraska program in desperate need off a re-energizing and revitalization. Sims thinks the team is heading in the right direction.

“I really think this team, once we develop the fact that we lead the team, that’ll take us a long ways,” Sims said. “Coach Rhule, he’s done a great job at helping us out and leading us. His biggest thing for us was to get us ready to lead each other instead of him having to do everything. He wants this to be a player-led team and I think we’re this close to being there. Like everybody’s buying in and I think this team is gonna be really, really good.

Jeff Sims seemingly wins Nebraska QB battle after Casey Thompson enters NCAA Transfer Portal

Jeff Sims transferred to Nebraska to compete with incumbent starter Casey Thompson for the starting quarterback position. While head coach Matt Rhule hasn’t made any formal announcements, Sims has appeared to win the battle as Thompson entered the NCAA Transfer Portal last week.

Thompson did not participate in the spring game as he was recovering from an injury, giving Sims a prime opportunity to showcase what he can bring to the team.

He did so, impressing many people including On3’s Jesse Simonton.

“The Georgia Tech transfer made a statement Saturday with his performance in Nebraska’s spring game. Sims was by far the Cornhuskers’ best quarterback in the scrimmage, leading a couple of scoring drives and not turning the football over,” Simonton said.

“Notably, Matt Rhule had his QBs live, so Sims was able to show off both his big arm and his elusive 4.4-speed. He escaped multiple would-be sacks in the scrimmage, and on a designed QB draw, ran through two defenders for a touchdown.”
