Last week, Nebraska made a major change by firing Scott Frost and installing Mickey Joseph as interim head coach. Joseph got right to work after the Cornhuskers’ loss to Oklahoma, firing defensive coordinator Erik Chinander, and he explained why he did it after just one game.

Through four games this year, Nebraska is allowing 35.5 points per game, which ranks last in the Big Ten this season. The straw that broke the camel’s back came last week against Oklahoma when the Cornhuskers allowed 49 points at home.

That’s when Joseph decided to make a change.

“Chins is a good man and a good coach,” Joseph said in his weekly press conference, via the Omaha World-Herald’s Sam McKewon. “But the numbers didn’t add up. I didn’t see us getting better. For four weeks, I didn’t see us getting better from Week 1 to Week 4.”

Over the offseason, Frost — who had just signed a restructured contract — did a major overhaul of the coaching staff. He not only hired Joseph away from LSU, but also brought in former Pitt offensive coordinator Mark Whipple and hired Nebraska’s first full-time special teams coordinator since 2016. Chinander, who came over with Frost from UCF, was one of the lone holdovers during the shakeup.

The staff will have another new look when the Huskers come out of the bye week. Their next game is coming up Sept. 30 against Indiana.

Nebraska fires defensive coordinator Erik Chinander after lopsided loss to Oklahoma

Nebraska parted ways with defensive coordinator Erik Chinander on Sunday, HuskerOnline’s Sean Callahan reported. Special teams coordinator Bill Busch will take over as interim DC for the remainder of the 2022 season.

Interim head coach Mickey Joseph made the move following the Cornhuskers’ 49-14 loss to Oklahoma, where Nebraska’s defense allowed 580 yards and seven touchdowns to the Sooners.

The firing comes exactly one week following former head coach Scott Frost’s firing after last week’s loss to Georgia Southern. Nebraska is now 1-3 on the season entering conference play following the mid-season coaching turnover.
