Mickey Joseph addresses his plan on the recruiting trail: 'We're going to recruit like we're going to be here'

The Nebraska Cornhuskers named Micky Joseph as their interim head coach after firing Scott Frost following their Week 2 loss. Being named an interim coach does not guarantee any sort of job security at the head coaching position or with the new coach to come in. But Joseph is not letting that stop him from doing his job. Although his future in Nebraska is now uncertain following this season, he plans on handling things the right way, especially in recruiting.

“We going to recruit like we’re going to be here. That’s the right thing to do,” said Joseph. “So we’re gonna send coaches out on Wednesday; they’re gonna be out Wednesday night. Then Thursday and Friday, they’ll recruit and get back in there on Saturday; the ones who don’t have a game. I’ll be on the road Friday. I’ll be in Monroe on Friday, New Orleans on Saturday, and be back here Sunday. No, we’re going to do the job the right way, do things the right way here. We’re not going to sabotage the place knowing, saying, that we might not be here. The best thing to do and the most professional thing to do is to do things the right way.”

No matter what the future may hold for Joseph, he plans on carrying himself like an actual head coach regardless of the interim tag.

Joseph on recruiting: We are selling the university of Nebraska

Just because Joseph carries himself in such a manner doesn’t necessarily mean that the recruits will respond to him all the same. With the program short a head coach, incoming athletes don’t really have an idea who they will be playing for. But that does not matter when it comes to Joseph’s pitch to recruits. For him, it’s elementary; you’re not committing to play for the head coach. You’re committing to come play for the University of Nebraska and represent the legendary program.

“Just speaking to the recruits last weekend, talking to them the last two weeks on the phone; they are all in because we’re selling the university of Nebraska. No matter who sits in this chair, you are committed to the University of Nebraska. So, we are selling the University of Nebraska. Like I said, we’re gonna go do things the right way. We’re not going to try to sabotage anything. If we don’t get the job and we have to leave here, they’re gonna say we left this place better than we found it. So, we’re gonna do things the right way. I expect my coaches to do it. I expect everybody to do their job.”

Joseph may not have a job with Nebraska at the end of this season. Still, the way he’s conducting himself as the interim head coach, he will find a role somewhere if the Cornhuskers decide to move on from him.
