Nebraska has made it official. Scott Frost is out as head coach. The program announced the news on Sunday afternoon.

The Cornhuskers announced they’re parting ways with Frost, who was in his fifth season as the head coach of his alma mater. His tenure was marred by one-score losses, including a big one in Week 0 when Nebraska blew a second-half lead en route to a 31-28 loss to Northwestern in Dublin, Ireland. Nebraska dropped another one-score game with a 45-42 loss at the hands of Georgia Southern in Week 2.

During his time in Lincoln, Frost amassed a 16-31 record, including a 10-26 record in Big Ten action. He returned to Nebraska after two years at UCF, one year removed from a perfect 13-0 season in 2017, but couldn’t get anything going with the Cornhuskers.

Mickey Joseph will take over as Nebraska’s interim head coach for the remainder of the 2022 season.

Frost’s future came into question over the offseason following a 3-9 2021 season. He signed a restructured contract, which resulted in a reduced buyout and a pay cut. He also revamped the coaching staff, bringing in Pitt offensive coordinator Mark Whipple and LSU wide receivers coach Mickey Joseph as part of the overhaul.

Nebraska also brought in a new quarterback this season after Adrian Martinez entered the transfer portal, bringing in former Texas star Casey Thompson to lead the new-look offense. All told, the Cornhuskers brought in 16 transfers from the portal to fill holes on the roster.

One of the big plays from the season came in that Week 0 game against Northwestern. Nebraska had a 28-17 lead, but Frost opted to try for an onside kick. That proved costly as Northwestern scored 14 unanswered points to come away with the victory.

Afterward, Frost took the fall for the fateful decision.

“I made the (onside) call,” Frost said, via Nebraska On3’s Steven Sipple. “So it’s on me. I thought if we got it, we could end the game.”

Frost was also asked if he’d make the same call again, and he had a blunt response.

“If I had it over,” he said, “I wouldn’t make the call.”

Nebraska rebounded after that Week 0 loss with a 38-17 victory over North Dakota in Week 1. On Saturday, though, the Cornhuskers dropped another disappointing game in Week 2, falling to 1-2 on the season. That was apparently enough, as Frost is now out and Nebraska is moving forward in a new direction.
