Nebraska secured a huge win this weekend as they defeated Indiana 35-21 at home. It was the Cornhusker’s first win since the firing of head coach Scott Frost, the first win for interim head coach Mickey Joseph, and the team’s first conference win of the season. Saturday’s victory was huge for Nebraska’s morale and much needed, as head coach Mickey Joseph spoke on his emotions following the game.

“Well that was the big emotional part for me was just seeing their faces after the game because they’ve been in so many close games that they hadn’t closed out,” Joseph said. “So just the moment in the locker room seeing the relief on their face like okay, we know we can do it.”

Nebraska notoriously lost eight of their games last season by one score or less, followed by losing two games this season by three points to teams they were double-digit favorites to, as Joseph spoke to the importance of getting the job done this time around for the team’s confidence.

“You can always tell somebody I know you can do it,” Joseph said. But if they never do it, then they’re gonna have doubts.”

The Cornhuskers entered the second half tied 21-21 and finished strong, posting a second half shutout and scoring two big touchdowns in the fourth quarter by Casey Thompson, who rushed for one and threw for another. Nebraska had a bye week prior to Saturday’s matchup, which clearly paid off for them, as Joseph attributed their fourth quarter heroics to their preparation.

“But they didn’t have any doubts in the fourth quarter, we asked them to finish in the fourth quarter, we asked them to strain to finish, and they did and they won the fourth quarter. But they practiced that way, they practiced that way for the last two weeks,” Joseph said.

Nebraska’s victory was crucial for the self esteem of the team and the program as a whole, likely feeling a big weight lifted off of their shoulders. The win was great, but the Cornhuskers cannot dwell on it too long, as they head into a short week. Nebraska goes on the road for a Friday night matchup versus Rutgers that will air at 7:00 p.m. ET on FS1. They’re currently favored by a field goal, but are facing a Rutgers team that just suffered back to back conference losses, and will be looking to bounce back.
