The game might be over, but Northwestern is running up the score on Nebraska online after the Wildcats came from behind to upset the Huskers in the season opener in Dublin. Head coach Pat Fitzgerald posted a picture of him with a Guinness, saying the team deserved some “good, clean, Irish fun.”
And late on Saturday, Northwestern offensive line coach Kurt Anderson took a shot at Nebraska head coach Scott Frost and his recent comments about how Nebraska’s offensive linemen were frequently puking at practice.
Frost said during fall camp that the Huskers offensive line was being worked so hard by offensive line coach Donovan Raiola that the group was vomiting quite frequently.
But when the action got real, it was the Wildcats who were effective in the trenches. Along with providing clean pockets for quarterback Ryan Hilinski most of the game, the Wildcats rushed 47 times for 214 yards as a team. Nebraska rushed for just 110 yards in the game.
With Northwestern emerging triumphant as Nebraska choked away yet another one-score game under Frost, Anderson took his chance to have a little good, clean, Irish fun on social media.
Anderson’s jab was a clear callout of Frost talking about how much his offensive line vomited in camp
Frost said he guesses his offensive linemen vomit 15-20 times per practice under Raiola’s watch. He made the comments during his radio show, Husker Sports Nightly, on Thursday night.
“It’s not because they’re not in shape – he’s just working them hard,” Frost said, via the Omaha World-Herald’s Evan Bland. “I think they love it. He’s kind of freed them up to go be aggressive and I love the way they’re coming off the ball.”
Raiola spent the last three years as the assistant offensive line coach for the Chicago Bears, and this is his first full-time college coaching job. He previously worked at the Division I level as a graduate assistant at Notre Dame from 2015-16.
Frost overhauled his coaching staff shortly after he signed a revamped contract that included a pay cut. Raiola was among the biggest additions, as were wide receivers coach Mickey Joseph and offensive coordinator Mark Whipple. The sweeping changes camp after Nebraska went 3-9 overall last season in a year filled with one-score losses.
