After announcing that he would return to North Carolina for another season on Sunday, Caleb Love addressed a viral fan tweet involving an innocent grandma. The fan shared a photo of a woman smiling as she stood inside a massive birdcage, with a caption saying they would keep their grandma locked in the cage until Love announced his return to UNC.

Once Love made his announcement official, he replied to the image ordering the fan to free their grandma finally.

Caleb Love marks return by joking with fans

Although the image itself has made the rounds on the internet for years as a joke, the joke fit perfectly with the looming decision by Love this offseason. One fan trying to drum up support for Love returning to the Tar Heels joked that his innocent grandma would remain in the cage as a hostage until Love returned. Love himself saw the picture, and although it likely didn’t impact his decision to stay another year it might have helped according to fans in on the joke.

Last season, Love was part of a Tar Heels team that shocked the nation with their NCAA Tournament run that saw them knock off Baylor and Duke on their way to the National Championship Game against Kansas. While North Carolina was unable to win it all, the season was an incredible success for first-year head coach Hubert Davis. In Davis’ first year, North Carolina made the NCAA Championship and built the foundation for another great season next year.

Caleb Love announced on Sunday that he would be return next season after all, stating that his story was “still being written.” Coming out of high school, Love was one of the most coveted prospects in America. He was rated as a five-star prospect and the No. 4 point guard in the country, according to the On3 Consensus Rankings for the 2020 cycle.

Love joins his teammates Armando BacotRJ Davis, and Leaky BlackBrady Manek was the lone starter for the Tar Heels who won’t return next year after he exhausted his NCAA eligibility.
